EUROPEAN STUDIES, master’s degree programme

The study programme is carried out by the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence in collaboration with The Centre for European and Transition Studies. This interdisciplinary academic programme offers  an opportunity to study economic, political and legal space of Europe, to acquire a deeper knowledge of European integration process and to analyse functional principles, procedures and major policies of EU beyond disciplinary boundaries. During studies, students can choose field for specialization, e.g. EU Law, trade, energy issues, migration, regional and social dimension and external relations.  



Study programme director prof. Inna Šteinbuka 

Inna Šteinbukacurrently Head of the European Commission Representation in Latvia. She started her career in the EC in 2005 when she was holding the position of Director for Economic and Regional Statistics at Eurostat. In 2009 Inna Šteinbuka became Director for Social and Information Society Statistics at Eurostat. From 2001 until 2005 she was Chair of the Latvian Public Utilities Commission in charge of regulation of electricity, gas and telecommunication markets as well as railway and postal services. From 1999 until 2001 she was Senior Advisor to Executive Director in the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC. From 1991 until 1999 Inna Šteinbuka was Director of Economic Analyses and Fiscal Policy Department in the Latvian Ministry of Finance and Advisor to Minister of Finance. Inna Šteinbuka is Professor of economics at the University of Latvia and full member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. She holds a PhD in Economics from St. Petersburg State University of Economics and Finance. Her research interests are competitiveness, productivity, tax, budget and fiscal policy.

 The Programme  provides studies in international environment of lingual and cultural diversity by attracting both international students and lecturers. In addition to interdisciplinary EU thematic course, also French language course is included in the programme. During studies students are offered to participate in national and international academic conferences and publish the results of their researches. Students are also offered to participate at EU supported research projects. The Programme offers and encourages interdisciplinary, interactive, and innovative teaching methods which are characterized by group works, study trips, practical case analyses and discussions lead by internationally recognized domestic and foreign experts with comprehensive academic and professional experience in EU matters, thus strongly ensuring both theoretical and professionally practical aspects during studies.
