Psychological counselling is recommended
when facing various problems that cause concern and thereby impacting studies and personal
In the process of counselling the client and the psychologist jointly resolve certain difficulties
and problems, significant questions of studies, relationships, emotions or work, mostly
focussing on the present and the future, formulating definite goals, which the client wants to
implement. The consultant can help to assess the alternatives at hand and to arrive at the
individually most appropriate solution. Consultants are committed to be objective, good
listeners, do not blame the seeker of advice and avoid making judgments.
Many people attend counselling sessions to comprehend their problems that seemingly lead
them to dead end. The consultant helps to seek clearer grasp of these problems, enabling a
choice of definite strategic actions for resolution of these problems.
Clients usually expect two things from the counselling. Firstly, to be heard out. Secondly,
support in choosing or identifying the strategic actions. When preparing to attend a
counselling session, it is beneficial to consider the most important points, thus, the
cooperation will have a good balance between hearing out and choice of future actions.
The task of the psychologist is to encourage and support the client, yet it is important to
realise that only the client him/herself can introduce the changes in his/her life and assume
responsibility thereof. The usual duration of a counselling session is 45-60 minutes and they
can be repeated.
Counselling sessions could help
- to understand oneself better
- to consider personally important matters
- to understand one's feelings
- to consider options for action
- to make choices
Could a conversation with parents and friends work just as well?
Consultant is different from family and friends.
- not involved in client's everyday life
- not critical, does not lay blame, do not have any preconceptions of client
- his the only source of information about client is the client him/herself
It is not always easy to discuss everything with family and friends, because:
- there are matters a person might not want to share
- there are concerns that the conversation might impact friendship
- reluctance to cause worries to friends
- preference to consider the issues well before broaching the subject to friends and family
- wish to talk more freely about the matters, avoiding the pressure of friends and relatives
